Did you think Roots did it job as a prequel?
Is it better than Sign?
Which one of them pulled the prequel job better?
Were there special moments that stuck more than others?

It's sort of difficult to compare the two, seeing as how the characters in SIGN weren't central characters in IMOQ, while the characters in ROOTS are (mainly of them anyway) focal characters in G.U..
ROOTS did indeed do a splendid job as a prequel (with the last episode being an epilogue, heh). All the background information regarding TaN, the Twilight Brigade, and character relations that weren't explicitly detailed in the games (Yatta = er, headmaster of TaN, I forget the PC name) was pretty good. Phyllo (sp?) for example. If someone didn't watch ROOTS, they wouldn't really have that great of an understanding of his relationship to Haseo and Ovan.

i really liked .hack//roots - it seems more related to .hack//GU than sign to IMOQ as the main character is the same.. but i havn't actually played the GU games yet, i guess i prefer to watch the animes..

I think ROOTS did really well as a prequel. Like Watari mentioned the characters were directly connected to the GU games where the SIGN characters were not. I can't say one did a better job than the other as prequels. Both gave you background information that helped to make the games more enjoyable. I personally liked SIGN more for various little reasons. ROOTS was awesome too though!

Roots is to GU what SIGN was to IMQO with a few differences, for example, SIGN and IMQO having longer time between them and having more or less a bigger version update between them.

I hate to be a negative nelly but you are wrong. If you pay attention in SIGN you will notice throughout it they mention that there is a group being referred to as the dothackers is trying to figure what is going on. Now what doesn't make sense about this is that Kite didnt come into play until after Aura woke up, so I am lead to beleive that the people they were informing Subaru about were none other than Balmung and Orca.... which would mean that IMOQ picked up right where SIGN left off. As SIGN left off with Sora being data drained by Skieth, and of course as you all know the Skieth that attacks in the very beginning of IMOQ already has Sora within him. Either way it has been made reference to multiple times that SIGN and IMOQ are actually somewhat side by side... so in a reality there is no long period of time between them if there is any period at all.
As for my opinion on ROOTS, it was a job well done in comparison to SIGN. Unless you are one of us and are just completely caught up in the whirlwind that is the .hack franchise.... SIGN can be extremely boring and hard to watch all the way through. ROOTS on the other hand was very easy to watch, and had a better sound track imo.

making me want to play GU after watching it http://dothackportal.com/forums/images/smilies2/biggrin.png
a bit off topic
but isnt there an episode in SIGN
where it shows what happened after they defeated Cubia?
a sequel of IMOQ.. its the last episode of SIGN
where they celebrated their victory in Netslum
and Sora was there..
and he was a good dancer http://dothackportal.com/forums/images/smilies2/wink.png

Unison.

There's also another OVA, Intermezzo, which details how Mimiru got into the game. When she was still a new player, if I'm not mistaken.
Something I want to point out about that episode:
Mimika should not be confused with Gardenia. Despite their similar appearance the two have no relation with each other.

Too many people assume she's Gardenia.
I could've sworn there's a recap-esque episode as well, but I don't know the name of it.

For a while I assumed it was Gardenia in Intermezzo too until I realized it could not be since the sequence of events could not possibly add up. It just wouldn't make any sense for that character to be showing up in IMOQ.

Only thing to point out about Unison, is that it is not a cannon OVA. So when you watch it view it for what it is, a fun little episode of the "what if they all met" scenario. It is not meant to be an actual part of the .hack storyline. In the same sence though some little secrets people who hadn't played the game series IMOQ are revealed... like Macha being Mia. All in all... I love the unison episode http://dothackportal.com/forums/images/smilies2/smile.png

I feel like I could have gotten more out of .hack// roots but other than that I liked it!
Roots did a nice job as a prequel, it explained a lot of info that you couldn't get in the game. Although not a huge fan of roots (I still liked watching it, it just wasn't a favored) it was indeed a nice beginning.
